It seems like an unthinkable fashion choice, wearing socks without shoes to the beach. Samira insisted the reason behind it was all to do with function. The fine white sands of Tokeh Beach, just outside of Freetown, are too rough for her delicate feet.
Samira’s entire beach look is as original as those socks. The jaunty fedora is perfect for warding off the harsh rays, directional sunglasses are a must-have accessory during the harmatan glare and a lick of pink gloss on the lip is, let’s face it, good for any occasion.
The chicken print is a popular choice at the fabric market on Malamar Thomas Street in Freetown. It’s a fetching design that can look as smart in the form of a soft furnishing cover as it does when fashioned into a three piece matching Africana extravaganza, demonstrated here by Rugiatu.
Rugiatu is down with the print, but her real love of chickens is more about how they taste when you serve them up to a hungry family. “When I cook chicken for my family, they are very glady. Chickens are very very sweet when you eat them”.
