About

My name is Jo Dunlop and I’m an Australian living in Freetown, Sierra Leone. When I moved here in 2011, it soon became clear that what Freetown lacks in high street shopping, it makes up for in style. The streets are teeming with some of the most resourceful, brave and outrageous fashion decisions ever made. In a country so commonly associated with civil war and blood diamonds and most recently Ebola, I felt inspired to show a different side to Sierra Leone and reveal an unlikely fashion hotspot.

    • Hi Simon,
Thanks for the thumbs up. I thought of you when I was in Oz at Christmas. Found myself swimming at Bondi with none other than Barnesy. He is just as irresistible in person. Hope you are well. x

  4. Loved this Jo – had to watch all at once. Glad you stuck to your guns – your equanimity is perfect. Everyone is so inspiring – I’m such a slob and now I wanna go colour! (Loved the bland sameness of bondi action wear – brilliant). Thanks thanks – great to see resilience and joy and context,

  6. Jo –
I’ve done the binge watch on iview and read the stories too… supposed to be bed time now but I am so amped….. The stories and visuals are brilliant on their own – but you context is everything.
Aside from the moving insights, so relieved that you’ve demonstrated that un-funded, self-motivated dream-driven style trumps 😉
keep finding the good things xx

  9. Amazing series, so inspiring. Its fantastic to see the positive stories and the personality of a country that has suffered so much. The resilience and optimism of the people is something that all of us pampered westerners could learn a lot from. Loved every minute :)

  10. I got a hint about this great short fashion series on Sierra Leone through Facebook. On the morning of Good Friday, we were glued to the Tv screen and watched all six episodes in our Sydney home without a break.
Great to see a brighter side of the African story that media in the West have neglected to tell for decades.

  12. fantastic – wouldn’t it be great if they can come to the fashion world outside of Africa and do a tour and spin off some industries and get paid and make a life changing difference to the place!
